Making a giant pumpkin, -today is Thursday, on Tuesday the two halves of the big mould were filled using slabs of clay, inlaid like a patchwork. and yesterday they were close together, today I have exposed both sides whilst it’s other side is held strong in the mould, now filling the spaces between thr patchwork slabs -the crevasses -with clay, tomorrow Friday if the pumpkin is strong enough to hold its own shapeit will be turned totally out of the mould without support and then very carefully left to dry and strengthen over the coming days, when it will be surfaced smooth with hacksaw blade‘s and rubber kidneys and metal kidneys and rubber kidneys and metal kidneys until it is succulent and the plump fecund surfaces shine with burnished particles. Then the stem will be made, gently dried, fettled and whittled.. then joined onto the body, and left to dry. Because this is a sealed shape the drying is long and slow perhaps a month before the first firing, I’ll post the stages as the piece progresses.#claypumpkin #clay #handbuildingwithclay #handbuildingceramics
